Company History - History

History

In the late 1950’s Amelia Gunnell worked as a registered nurse at a state hospital in Caro, Michigan. Daily, she worked with the severely handicapped and tried to meet the challenges associated with providing comfort and mobility, because these individuals would not fit into regular wheelchairs.

It soon became clear to Amelia that something better had to be done to answer the needs of the severely handicapped. She shared her frustration with her husband Bob, who happened to be a finish carpenter. Together they started designing and building wooden chairs, which would be specially suited to each individual’s disabilities and deformities. This was the birth of custom wheelchairs.

Over these many years Gunnell, Inc. has developed into a company that is known for custom, durable, and versatile products. A whole industry has developed as a result of those first wooden chairs made by Bob & Amelia Gunnell, & many thousands of severely disabled individuals have lived a better life because they cared.
